50 Honky Tonks in 50 States

No matter where you go in the United States of America, you'll find country fans - and a Honky Tonk that feels like a second home. Whether it's a hole-in-the-wall dive bar or a multi-level cavernous club, it doesn't really matter as long as there's cold beer and good music. We took a virtual road trip and discovered some pretty colorful places. Check out our list! By Jamison Rotch, with Erin Mercer

Alabama - Cowboys, <b>Cowboys</b>
4657 South Oates St.
Dothan, AL 36301
<a href="" target="_blank">View website »</a>

Providing high quality entertainment for the L.A. area – that’s Lower Alabama – for 30 years, Cowboys is the destination for country stars looking to connect with fans in the Heart of Dixie. Their list of past performers is heavy on Hall of Famers - Hank Williams, Jr., Merle Haggard, and Don Williams to name a few – and it continues to draw a new generation of stars. If cuttin’-a-rug on the ample dance floor isn’t your thing, the 5 pool tables, 4 bars and a full kitchen provide a pleasant alternative to a night of two-stepping.

Alaska - The Last Frontier Bar, <b>The Last Frontier Bar</b>

Anchorage, AK 99504
<a href="" target= "_blank">Get Directions »</a>

Built in 1991, The Last Frontier Bar proves to be a fitting name when it comes to the country music scene in Alaska. Honky Tonks have become an endangered species in the Alaskan Wilderness, but this popular spot with locals still makes use of its 1,000 square foot floating dance floor and the band will kick up a country tune on request.

“This is just like Tootsie’s in Nashville…but better.” That’s what John Rich had to say when he walked into this Old Town Scottsdale landmark recently celebrating its 60th anniversary. A “one stop shop” for adult libation, The Rusty Spur Saloon features live music every day and night (with no cover charge) and has a laid-back vibe that has brought stars like Rich, Dierks Bentley, Blake Shelton, James Otto, Brad Paisley and Joe Nichols through the Saloon’s swinging doors.

Arkansas - The White Water Tavern, <b>The White Water Tavern</b>
2500 W 7th St
Little Rock, AR 72205
<a href="" target="_blank">View website »</a>
<a href=""target= "_blank">Get Directions »</a>

Known locally as the WWT, this legendary spot in Little Rock is the kind of smaller venue that lets fans get up close and personal with the local, regional and the occasional national acts that take the stage several nights a week. The cover is usually cheap, the beer cheaper and the dive bar décor – including a bar that’s a repurposed shuffleboard top – makes this hole-in-the-wall feel just like home.

A stop at The Crystal Palace should be an item on any true country music fan’s bucket list. Founded by the legendary Buck Owens, who was born in Texas but moved to Bakersfield in 1951, The Crystal Palace is a nightclub, restaurant, and souvenir shop all rolled up into one. Buck performed many times before passing in 2006, but his spirit – and the music he loved -- lives on as the Palace continues to offer live music daily, including shows from some of today’s top performers. Be sure to make time for a tour of Buck’s museum of one-of-a-kind memorabilia from his 40-year career in country music.

Delaware - SportZone, <b>SportZone</b>
235 Stadium Street
Smyrna, DE 21635
<a href=""target="_blank">View website »</a>
<a href=""target="_blank">Get Directions »</a>

We know, we know. The word "SportZone" doesn’t exactly conjure up images of sawdust floors, fiery fiddles and steel guitars, but in Delaware country fans will take their music where they can find it. And since the SportZone started up a country night on Wednesdays there has been a line out the door to try line dancing. That’s one small two-step for man, one giant country leap for The First State.

Pensacola, Florida 32507
<a href=""target="_blank">View website »</a>
<a href=""target="_blank">Get Directions »</a>

Entertaining visitors and locals since 1964 with events including a “Mullet Toss,” this self-proclaimed “Last American Roadhouse” takes its name from its location on the Florida/Alabama line, although it’s actually entirely in the Sunshine state. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan almost wiped the Gulf Coast landmark off the map, but after an extensive rebuilding effort, it was returned to its Honky Tonkin’ glory with a grand re-opening in April of 2012.

Wild Bill’s is one of many Honky Tonks on the list claiming to be the largest in the country, and it’s hard to argue with their 70,000 square feet of space – including a 5,000 square foot dance floor. Spice up your “Hump Day” with free line-dance lessons on Wednesday. On weekdays you’ll find top-notch local cover bands, while weekends rope in the national acts like Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Justin Moore, Gary Allan, Ronnie Dunn, Chris Young, Dwight Yoakum, Luke Bryan and more.

Nashville Waikiki is your chance to enjoy the local paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) for a little Honky Tonkin’ in the 50th state. It’s one of the few night spots on the island with an after-hours license, so you have permission to keep the good times going until the wee hours of the morning. Live entertainment is offered five nights a week with house bands from the mainland, although be on the lookout for an honest-to-goodness country artist. Dozens of photos along the wall provide photographic proof country stars including Brooks and Dunn, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson have taken a trip to paradise.
